When you find yourself in a hole, the first step is to quit digging. Once your head helps you realize the futility of your circumstance, and helps you identify “those” providing, selling, and financing the shovel, then your heart takes over. The way to move forward is to infuse kindness and compassion into our dealings with others. We need to let go of the ego and make our world more about others. When we recognize the humanity in your fellow human beings and act accordingly, then we change the environment. If we change the way we think about things, the things we think about change.
But changing our hearts and minds toward each other is not the only issue we confront. The world is on the brink of being able to challenge what it means to be a human. Science is developing technology that can be used for great good, but great evil as well. Manipulation of genetics and the incorporation of increasingly invasive technology, into our environment and literally into our bodies, is not a distant threat, but a present reality. Serious people are warning of the threat posed to humanity if machines become self-aware.
Less chilling, but equally impactful, is the reality that work, as we have known it, is changing dramatically. As robots take over tasks and eliminate work, how do we redefine our purpose? Are we just economic units to be shelved when we no longer serve a practical purpose as workers and consumers?
Our central task as humans is to ask who we are, why we are here, and what is our purpose. These most important questions are answered by each of us in the context of a thousand other influences. But true meaning can’t be dictated. It must flow from your heart. Your mind, can and must, help you determine how to overcome the obstacles in the pathway to answering these questions. But only the heart can provide the navigation, the touchstone, the worthy direction, for your journey to insight. The mind may help you determine truth, but your heart (LOVE), is the only force that can give meaning to that truth. Without the heart, knowledge is fire in the hands of a child.
My heart and my head are two of my worst enemies. They are like the devil and angel, only I can’t figure out which one is which…
If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.
A person’s most useful asset is not the head full of knowledge, but a heart full of love, an ear ready to listen, and a hand willing to help.
As a rock on the seashore he standeth firm, and the dashing of the waves disturbeth him not. He raiseth his head like a tower on a hill, and the arrows of fortune drop at his feet. In the instant of danger, the courage of his heart sustaineth him; and the steadiness of his mind beareth him out.
Spiritual knowledge is a burden if carried on the head, but beautiful if brought into the heart.
Don’t follow your head, for it has no heart; don’t follow your heart, for it has no logic;
follow your soul, for it has both.
In the heart’s deepest place, where the burden of ego is dropped and the mystery of soul is penetrated, a man finds the consciousness there not different in any way from what all other men may find. The mutuality of the human race is thus revealed as existing only on a plane where its humanness is transcended. This is why all attempts to express it in political and economic terms, no less than the theosophic attempts to form a universal brotherhood, being premature, must be also artificial. This is why they failed.
